Can't think of even one "good" Mexican cigar.

when you say 'Mexican' cigar, do you mean that it's made in Mexico, or
that it just has to have Mexican tobacco in it?
'cause i can thing of a few good cigars that include a Mexican binder/
filler.

Macanudo Baron De Rothschild, Diplomat, Duke of Devon, Hampton Court,
Hyde Park
The whole Partagas Dom. Rep. line has a Mexican binder and Mexican
filler mixed in. (try #1, #8, #10, 898)
Alec Bradley Pryme Gold, Trilogy Authentic Corojo, Havana Sun Grown

A. Turrent is an old brand now sold at JR's and some others. It is made in
Mexico by the family that grows the tabacco for most Mexican cigars. They
are not cheap however.

There are a number of cigars "made" in Mexico, but nearly all use tobacco
from elsewhere with some Mexican tobacco as well. The ones above are good
examples.

Steve Saka had an article in "Cigar" magazine a year or so ago about his
visit to Mexican tabcaleras. His conclusion was that most Mexican puros are
pretty bad. There were a few that were better than the rest, but none of the
better ones were imported into the USA.

Well I'm a Texan, and I find Travis Club quite bad. I can't say that
if I were from Monterrey I'd find "los puros del sur" to be any
different just because of differing heritage.

(To be fair, the Travis Club Rothschild Maduro is actually a half
decent, machine-made longfiller/natural wrapper cigar for under a
buck)

it's curiosity, that's all. I travel lots to Mexico and I remember
seeing lots of different brands (TeAmo, ATurrent, Dona Laura, come to
mind,). When I went to smoke lounges (i smoke a pipe) I remember most
were cigar smokers and all were smoking Mexican cigars, we got into a
conversation about how good the Mexican cigars were (in their
opinion). at the time I didnt smoke cigars so i didn't really know
what was a good cigar. so i took their opinion at face value.
but again, out of curiosity I wanted to try a good Mexican cigar but
there doesn´t seem to be a lot of variety with the usual etailers.
Maybe on my next trip to Mexico (in a few weeks) I'll grab a few boxes
and post how good or bad they are.

Cool, I was just curious too. Oaxacan coffee is as good as some of the

As other have wrote, don't expect too much from the puros(100%
mexican).

But I have enjoyed some of the mexican cigars that used mixed leaf.
The Te-Amo Anniversarios are decent smokes IMO.

Winston is correct. Te Amos are "decent" smokes. On a scale of 1-10, I'd
give them a 3 or 4.
On the other hand, there are thousands of cigars in the 4+ category. Given
the choice, I'll buy the better ones.

Of course! If there is anything that ASC does besides breed remarkable
friends and enemies, it seems to help people learn about cigars.

Myself, I have learned so very much by just digging through the
archives here, I only feel it right to step up and help someone if I
feel I have something decent to add. Hope you didn't feel patronized;
additionally, feel welcome to ask anything.

Unfortunately, the best Mexican cigar I've smoked was a fake Cohiba.
Right now I have some 1830 Santa Clara double coronas that I don't
particularly recommend because of their strong soapy flavor. They're
well made, but taste like they were cut with some non-tobacco substance.
I tend to avoid Mexican cigars now.

Although some would argue there is little or no Mexican puro that's
any good, I'd recommend the Te Amo for typical Mexican flavor. There
was also a Te Amo with a Havana 2000 wrapper that was a bit better,
albeit, higher priced.

Any reason you are sticking to Mexican cigars?

For $5 to $10 per stick I know that I and everyone else on this group
can recommend, collectively, literally hundreds of different cigars.

Although you didn't ask for it, I would like to point out a couple of
(rather objectively and generally recommended to occasional cigar
smokers) really good choices that aren't Mexican cigars:

- Arturo Fuente Hemingway Series - a pretty good golf choice might be
the huge Hemingway Masterpiece (9" by 52 ring) which sells for between
12 to 15 dollars in most brick and mortar shops/online stores that I
have seen

- Macanudo Classic and Maduro lines - solid, extremely consistent
cigars that err on the mild side. Generally around the 5 or 6 dollar
mark.

- Oliva Serie G Cameroon and Maduro - again, being unsure of your
wrapper preferences, I can pretty well recommend this line. These are
premium cigars at great prices, between 3 to 5 bucks a stick. The
Oliva family grows essentially all of their own tobacco used in their
proprietary cigars and runs a debt-free operation, so they keep their
cigars on the cheaper side. For a bit more expensive smoke you might
try the Master Blends III (excellent, around the $10 price point). I
would personally skip over the "O" and "S" series, they just don't do
it for me, for what they cost. Almost all Olivas are good smokes,
however.

- Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur series - Particularly the No. 1, a
mammoth churchill. These are excellent cigars that float around the 5
dollar price point. The No. 1 in particular would be large enough to
perhaps last you through an entire 9-hole side.

There are many more I could recommend. Bottom line, there are a LOT of
great smokes, don't limit yourself to Mexican cigars!
