We all know cigars that have specific and strong basic
flavours: peppery, sweet, spciy, chocolaty ... and if we're
unlucky, sour.

Does anyone know of a cigar that tastes umami?

heheh! Look back over my reviews: there was one I said was "savory," and
another I said was "beefy." I don't think it should be surprising that
cigars would have an umami flavor. With all the aging, fermenting, and
so on, sugars and proteins undergo amazing changes.

Well, fiddle-dee-dee.....
Are you stringing me along?
No. I had initially thought of telling you to go pluck yourself.
I wondered when you'd cross the bridge to poor taste.
Up til now I've been Haydn my true nature.
Well, you are a real Mahler of a brute.
You're on my shit Liszt, bub.
Then head on over. I'll time you with the timer over by the liquor. You
know, the bar tock.

Does anyone know of a cigar that tastes umami?
Isn't that just Japanese for what we might characterize as "meaty?"

Slight chemical pine-needle scent overlaying a note of sour
sweat and unwashed clothing, all underlaid by a strong
leathery flavour of farts and shit.

It's not quite "meaty".
A better term would be "savoury", because some mushrooms and
cheese are also heavy on umami.

True; true. I just looked it up. But I don't understand putting mushrooms
in the same bucket as steak and cheese, unless you are building a Philly

Genuine champignons are very nice with steak, but my
favourite are chanterelle -- fried with bacon bits and some
chopped parsley. A delight to improve any grilled cut of
meat, IMNSHO.

I'll have you know that "those tasteless white things" are capable of
sponging-up 10x their weight in yum-tastey grease! Enough so that they
have been dubbed an "honorary meat" for the purposes of all-meat pizza!

True; true. I just looked it up. But I don't understand putting mushrooms
in the same bucket as steak and cheese, unless you are building a Philly
Cheese Steak...
Depends on the mushrooms, but usually not those tasteless white things
in the store.
I'll have you know that "those tasteless white things" are capable of
sponging-up 10x their weight in yum-tastey grease! Enough so that they
have been dubbed an "honorary meat" for the purposes of all-meat pizza!
Bread is better and tastier for mopping up gravy and juce.
A couple of slices of granary baguette will do me anytime
...
Somebody want to explain to Alex what the phrase "do me" means in
UsofA brand English?

We all know cigars that have specific and strong basic
flavours: peppery, sweet, spciy, chocolaty ... and if we're
unlucky, sour.
Does anyone know of a cigar that tastes umami?
In the true sense of the word it should be a fatty feel. I first got
that when I was 16 and it made me fall in love with Monte #4s after
smoking the dry Dutch cigars.

I was pretty fit in my teens and 20s. I didn't get that fatty-feel
until later in life...

"When you're younger you can eat what you like, drink what you like, and
still climb into your 26 inch waist trousers and zip them closed. Then
you reach that age, 24-25, your muscles give up, they wave a little
white flag, and without any warning at all you're suddenly a fat
bastard" ~ Rimmer (Red Dwarf)

You could always sprinkle some MSG on it...

Google it. MSG was developed to provide umami. May we could put it in the
cap, like some cigars are sweetened.

<sigh> It was supposed to be a pun. Unami <--> unagi -- get it? "Where
the hell do you go for sushi that they put MSG on it?!

Btw, "unami" is from the Japanese word meaning "delicious" -- you know,
like MSG! ;)

Which is passing strange because the cuisine noted for its
love of MSG is Chinese, not Japanese ....
